The Hampshire Schools' double Gamelan has now arrived and is already being put to good use.

A Gamelan is an Indonesian orchestra consisting mainly of gongs, drums and metallophones. The two sections of the Gamelan - based on different scale patterns are called Slendro and Pelog.
Headteacher Nigel Barrell commented:
"Everyone who sees and plays it is captivated. It is a once in a lifetime experience for our children"
Schools in Area 3 have had the opportunity to attend a workshop with Andy Channing, a tutor from the South Bank Centre in London.
If you have always wanted to play an instrument but never got round to it, now is your chance to go one better and play in an Indonesian Orchestra. The Gamelan takes up the best part of a small room and can be played by up to 30 people simultaneously.
It is suitable for both beginners and more experienced musicians. Sandra Howlett, Senior Manager at Hampshire Music Service, says:
"Both adults and children over the age of 11 are eligible to join the class. Our only requirement is enthusiasm, and the class is free to all participants during the Spring Term 2000. It promises to he a really fun way to spend Monday evenings, giving players a great opportunity to create music using an exciting and unusual instrument. "
The Hampshire Gamelan originated in Java in 1994 where it was hired out to accompany an all night shadow puppet theatre. It was enlarged last year specifically for Hampshire. To book a place on the course - (numbers are limited to 20) - contact Kathy Moore on (02380) 652037.
